The surf in New York might not be the best in the world but it is fast becoming a hub of surf culture and surf art. Must be the long cold days of winter waiting for surf that inspires creativity. The first annual New York surf film festival is about to take off, hosted by two good friends of mine Mike Machemer and Tyler Breuer - see nysurfflilmfest.com. Mike is the stylish longboarder featured in this gallery.  The waves are generally formed by fast moving storms moving out to sea so the swells are shortlived but when they do come they can be hollow and powerful, and the long lazy days of summer can produce fun longboard days.
