Newport, Rhode Island is more famous for its mansions, sailboats, jazz festival and art galleries but during hurricane season it can  conjure up some great surf on the multitude of reefs that fringe the coastline. A few years back I was lucky enough to be there at the right time and scored what still goes down in RI folklore as one of the best swells ever. I was a guest of surfer/snowboarder/artist and now gallery owner, Mike Montanaro, and together with a few friends spent a few days surfing great waves and enjoying the  pleasures of New England fall days in Newport.
